This is a rare, 1980s UK built Marshall 3540 IBS bass head (have re-listed separately as I've decided to keep both the JCM800 bass series cabs as they're just too good to let go given how hard they are to find!) The amp is solid state, 200w per side into a minimum of 4 ohms, but can be bridged for 400w output. I picked this up quite recently by complete chance - it had a faulty power switch, but a quick call to the Marshall repair shop in Bletchley had that one sorted very quickly. So it's got a brand new genuine Marshall illuminated power switch, and the few cosmetic dings to the rack case itself have been patched up (the right hand rack ear was bent quite badly, but that's now back in alignment and repainted). It's been PAT tested and is electrically sound. The 3540 head is full range, there are EQ controls up to 10k, and the level of control you get over the internal crossover makes it possible to get some really interesting sounds. I've been humming and hawing about whether to keep this for months now because it does sound great for guitar, but I think I need something that breaks up at lower volumes more consistent with my other amp (Fender Bassman).

But for a solid state amp, the 'Boost' control adds a really nice drive to the clean tone - to my ears the harmonics are more even than odd, it almost has the characteristics of an old tubescreamer or something of that ilk. With all that said - plug a bass in and the low end capability immediately jumps into life, these things are designed for low end there is no question.

The bass (baritone, actually) player in the band I'm in A/B'd this setup with his Ampeg setup (SVT2, 810e) and in terms of sheer power, the Marshall basically blew it away. The Ampeg though was better suited to baritone, and had a more focused mid-range, but for 'normal' bass guitar, I love the sound of the Marshall over the Ampeg - it has an aggressive top end bite that really defines the low mids and fundamentals of the low notes, and higher notes are kept clear but under control. Subjectively, were I a bass player, I'd pick this over a solid state SVT in a second - transients are fast and powerful, there's tonnes of power to get some sub underneath the kick and drive things along, and there's heaps of cut in the mid and tops. It's absolutely perfect for aggressive music, or situations where you don't just need the power but also a good dose of growl.

Of course your mileage may vary with all of the above, but I felt like I should attempt to get across the experience we had with it in the studio, hopefully that will give you a decent reference point for what you're letting yourself in for! It just needs shoving in a rack case to keep it from getting beaten up again, then (short of nuclear war) I can see this running forever. Condition wise, well hopefully the pictures get across the general situation - some scuffs and scratches to the rack case on the amp, blah blah blah. It's pushing 30 years old and has clearly been used, but everything works perfectly - clean, quiet pots, etc. It's gonna cost ~£15.00 to post in the UK (have recently shipped it up north and back for repair so I know this is pretty accurate). Otherwise I can deliver / meet half way within a reasonable distance from Colchester (so London + surrounding areas is OK) whilst I'm out and about on my travels. Whatever works, basically.

My main bass is a 1984 Fender Precision Elite, which is basically a P-bass with two pairs of split coils, rather than one. Movie tamil vijay. I also use a custom bass (Bralan) for selected tracks. This custom bass has a humbucker 'stingray' set up. I have found most basses gel well with this amp, although a humbucker set-up tends to become a bit cloudy and muddy. I find the amp to be ideal for any brand of rock, but also versatile enough for the smooth tones of jazz/groove, and popiness of funk. The amp is more than loud enough for any live show, and unless playing a stadium with a dodgy PA, will never need to be boosted to anywhere near full volume. In bi-amp mode I have it hooked up to a vintage Acoustic 4x15 cabinet for the lows, and a Hartke 4x10 box for the mids and highs.
