Metallica used a Mesa MK 2 c+ preamp into a Marshall power amp w/ 6550 for Master and Justice. Those preamps have the bass mid and treble knobs in the circuit before 3 of the gain stages.

So Metallica would set the treble high, some mids, and no bass, to get the tone really chunky on palm mutes, then use the graphic eq to scoop out all the mids and pump up the bass. Most amps just have the one eq section after the gain stages, Soooo with most setups you could just get an eq pedal and put it before the amp with it set to a frown (mids pushed up), and suck the mids with the eq on the amp. Its the same thing as using a tube screamer to tighten up a high gain amp, because they have a big mid boost.

There are cheaper ways to get their tones I've learned. Mac tools code reader. I recently picked up a Marshall 8100 Valvestate. (yes Valvestate) All I can say is that this thing is fucking awesome.

It is one of the best ss amp I've ever played and it can get all the classic metallica, thrash and death/black metal tones. Metallica basically compressed the shit out of their sound on MOP and AJFA so it shouldn't be too surprising that you can pull those tones from a good ss head. This amp is really versatile too, it can get really Marshally sounding and I have a Jcm800 original so I'm not just bullshitting.

I picked it up for $150 and if you have money to burn check it out. I'm using it with V30s too so that also helps with tone and sounding like Metallica, Decapitated, Suffocation, and Death etc. Spend the fortune if you want for a good metal head but you can great pretty fucking badass tone from these as well as Crate Shockwave heads which are like $300.

Metallica has had a long and storied career. From their early days with guitarist Dave Mustaine to today’s line-up, one thing has remained constant: James Hetfield’s biting riffs and his guitar tone.

Depending on who you ask, Metallica’s best album was either Master of Puppets or Metallica, more widely known as “the Black Album.” Regardless of your favorite, there is no doubt that the Black Album propelled the band into the mainstream metal market. From the opening riff to “Enter Sandman” to the haunting guitars on “” and “,” the Black Album came to epitomize Metallica for a generation of metal fans. At the very heart of Metallica’s success were the riffs that Hetfield wrote for the band. Many fans can pick out a Metallica song from the first few chords. One of Hetfield’s most famous pieces of gear was his, although he also used a, as well.
