I have a Strat that says 'Squier Stratocaster Made in Japan by Fender'. It has an 'E' serial number followed by six digits. The Fender site says made between 1984 and 1987.

What would be the difference between this guitar and a 'Fender Stratocaster Made in Japan'? The frets are so worn that it can't be set up with good action without string buzz. The pickups don't sound as good as my 1995 MIM Strat. And it seems heavier than the MIM Strat.

(What is more desirable lighter or heavier?) When the frets were new the neck was great. Is this guitar worth refretting? BTW, it has frets that seem to be slightly smaller than the MIM Strat. Measured with a caliper the MIJ is.08' and the MIM is.085' (measurements are width of fret). Thanks in advance for any info on this. In the mid/early 80's the Squier moniker was to designate more 'entry level' units from Japan.

At the time, the MIJ Squiers were as good or even better than many of the MIA's of the same era! There is little difference between the MIJ Fender and Squier, but I believe the Squiers were meant for export to the US and the Fenders were for the rest of the world.

Your guitar is almost certainly worthy of a refret and a life long romance! Heavy vs light is player preference, and some have absolute reasons why one is better or worse. If the tone is not what you like, try switching the cap or the p/u's to a type you like better. Kyri is correct about the thick poly finish. Back in the 80's we all thought that poly ruled and a thick, deep paint job meant a super shiney, smooth and long lasting finish! Funny how things change!

By 'old spec' I meant that in addition to the truss adjust being at the base, the walnut plug is smaller and rounder like the JV design which closely imitated the real 50's ones. Sometime during the manufacturin timeline, the truss plug changed shape (necks still almost the same) and eventually the e series started having truss plugs with a hole in for adjustment of the truss rod.

I have a couple of the older ones (which look like yours) and one of the later pointy truss plug ones which is from around 1990. Here is the headstock of the older and newer (incindentally the newer one was refretted with jumbo frets in the picture). Click to expand.Just to add to stratmanchu's comments, the necks I have (May 83, June 83, and '90) are the absolute best necks I have come across. They were certainly worth getting refretted to make playable, and I plan never to sell mine.
