It must have been boiled off since I flushed and replaced the coolant when I purchased the vehicle. Anyway, I have exhaust communicating into the coolant system which is pressurising the radiator and losing coolant through heat and pushing it out to the overflow tank. Bubbles can be clearly seen from the overflow hose and the coolant gets dirty with carbon relatively quickly.

Apart from that, the engine still has heaps of power and there is no sign of oil / water contamination. Also no white smoke from the exhaust. I have read on a different forum that these engines are renowned for cracking heads from 200K Km and that often the damage will not show up with pressure tests or even x-rays. There is no need to replace a serviceable cam (s) so put the $ toward quality oils & coolant etc. I just recently replaced the head gasket on my 3rzfe, 18 months after I fitted up a reco head with a Chinese gasket set. The gaskets cost me $120, this time I got an original Toyota full engine gasket set for $480 and from the start I can tell its better. Before, the coolant would not siphon back to the radiator from the overflow bottle and would require top ups regularly, I think this was because there was a leak somewhere allowing air in to the cooling system which I could never find despite checking everything external I could. So paying for quality beats paying for crap twice. Call Toyota and get a price for a bare head, see what it costs and then compare prices from there.

It may be cheaper to buy aftermarket stainless valves that Toyota ones, and don't forget to replace the head bolts, as they are known to stretch when old. Goldie, I'd start by pricing everything. Start by pricing a full reco exchange engine...

That will encourage you to check all other options! If you have mechanical knowledge, and confidence, you could cost up a rebuild of your engine, and assemble it yourself. Make lists of prices and companies etc, and buy good quality parts so that you can use the chip and boost safely and reliably.

Or maybe a short motor and new head that you could put together. Don't forget the additional costs involved which many overlook, such as oils, filters, water pumps, hoses, maybe engine mounts, etc. Research and preparation is the key to a succesfull rebuild if you are going to do it yourself.
